This term in Literacy we will splitting our hour and a half lessons in to targeted reading and writing lessons. Within SFA (reading lesson time) the children will be continuing to read a range of both fiction and non-fiction texts by a range of authors and will be learning how to hone reading skills such as predicting, summarising, and inferring.
The first writing unit of the term will look at the Shakespeare play, 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and will involve the children immersing themselves in the narrative, studying characters in detail and eventually writing a summarised retelling of the complex plot. This will be followed by a contrasting unit, in which the children will look at word play in a range of humorous poetry.
In maths, once we have finished our work on fractions and percentages, we will be focusing on measure and converting between units. Later in the half term we will be looking at calculating using decimals. After half term we will be focusing on problem solving, geometry as well as building on some of our earlier fraction's knowledge.
In Science during this term, Year 5 children will be studying living things in detail through two units: 'Living things' and 'Animals including humans'. These units will cover topics such as animal groups, life cycles of both animals and plants and human development.
Our new history topic this term is the Maya. The children will learn where the Maya lived; significant moments in Maya history; the different city and states and what has happened to them now.
